HSMP
The HSMP, or Highly skilled Migrant Programme was created to enable highly skilled individuals to come to the United Kingdom to obtain employment or set up their own business.
It is a very popular and effective programme and useful to help in closing the huge Skills Shortage in the country.
It is different from Work Permit, in that you do not need to have had a specific offer of employment to apply.
It is also different from entry via innovator scheme, as you do not need to have a pre defined business plan or investment.
Hundred of persons are granted this visa yearly.
How Do I Qualify
To be qualified, you are scored on a number of areas and you must score 65 or more in total.
There are 6 main areas involved. These are
If you are 28 years or less, you automatically score 5 points
If you have a First Degree (BSc or BA), you score 15
If you have a Masters Degree, you score a total of 25 under education
Those with PhD scores an automatic of 30 points under this heading. So possible highest score under education is 30 points
If you hold an MBA qualification from designated institutions, it gives you additional advantage. See the various approved MBA Universities and Colleges when applying.
If you have had 5 years work experience at a graduate level, you score 25 points. You need not be a graduate at the time of taking up the job
If you have PhD and 3 years work experience at graduate level, you score 25 points. For 5 years experience at graduate level, comprising a two years at high managerial grade, or an administrator, you score 35 points
If you have had 10 years work experience at graduate level, including 5 years at senior management level, then you score 50 points.
You are required to demonstrate a minimum level of income has been earned in the last 12 months prior to your application.
In order to sort of make up for differences in earnings from different countries, the minimum amount expected to have been earned has be standardised to the equivalent level in various countries.
If you are in the UK, you would be expected to have earned at least £27,000 if under 28 years of age, and £40,000 if above 28 yrs.
In India or Nigeria for example your earnings at above 28 years of age is expected to be at least £5,000 or £3,500 respectively. You score 25, 35, or 50 points for attaining to the required earning.
ACHIEVEMENT IN CHOSEN FIELD
Here you are scored based on achievements in your field of expertise. If you have significant achievement, including having published work, press articles, awards, you score 15 points.
For those with outstanding achievements, they are people who have, for example, won the Nobel price, Oscars, BAFTA, Olympic medals, made major discovery, run publicly quoted companies or the like. They score 25 points.
SPOUSE ACHIEVEMENT If your spouse or unmarried partner has a first degree, you or diploma, you score another 10 points.
You should be willing to stay in the UK indefinitely and make it your home. You will be required to swear an oath to this regard.
Once you score your self, it is essential you have ALL evidence to justify your score. The HSMP officers will not accept part evidence, and it will only delay and perhaps waste your time. All documents should be sent in as original or certified copies by acceptable bodies.
You will need to pay a fee for the application. Can I Renew My HSMP Visa? If granted an HSMP visa, you will need to demonstrate that you can cater for yourself and any dependant with you, without recourse to public fund. You will also be required to demonstrate that you a have conducted a business or been in an employment since the HSMP was award to you to be eligible for renewal. Once renewed for up to three times (3 years), you can then apply for indefinite leave to remain in the UK or indeed British citizenry if you so wish.
