Most of the UK medical recruitment agencies are contractually tied to the NHS National Frame work - a body that regulates the activities of locum agencies, supplying available jobs to the locum agencies. They determine the rate of payments to the agencies.
Temporary NHS job cover requirements tend to go out to agencies that are registered with the NHS National frame work first, and if they are unable to fill such vacancies, the jobs are then sub contracted to locum agencies who are not registered with the National Frame work.
The later group of agencies thus pay more than those who are tied to the NHS frame work.
If you have decided to work as a locum doctor it is best to register with a small medical recruitment agency not tied up with the National frame work, and also with one of the agencies on the NHS National Frame Work Contract, as they tend to get more jobs and over a wide region.
The demand for locum doctors in the UK is high. This is especially so in specialties like emergency medicine (A&E), anaesthestics, psychiatry, and the surgical specialties.
Apart from registering with a mix of locum agencies covering a wide geographical region in the UK, as well as at least one with NHS National Frame Work and another not in the frame work, it is important to look for the following qualities when registering with medical recruitment agencies:
