Most of the UK medical locum agencies are contractually tied to the NHS National Frame work - a body that regulates the activities of locum agencies, supplying available jobs to the locum agencies, and determining the rate of payments to the agencies. Jobs tend to go our to agencies that are registered with the NHS National frame work first, and where they are unfilled by agencies who belong to this frame work, such jobs are sub contracted to locum agencies who are not registered with the National Frame work.
The later group of agencies thus pay more than those who are tied to the NHS frame work.
If you have decided to work as a locum doctor, why not register with at least one of the agencies on the NHS National Frame Work Contract, as they tend to get more jobs and over a wide region.
It is often smart to register with as many locum agencies as possible and across various regions of the UK, to ensure continuous supply of jobs in times of few locum jobs. By so doing, you are also better positioned to be able to negotiate rates and know when rates go up.
Medical Locum Payment Rates
The rates paid by locum agencies varies greatly as just been said. Those agencies who have "National Frame Work" contracts tends to pay less for same amount and grade of work done. However, because they charge the hospitals a little lesser than their counterparts who are not part of the NHS National Frame Work Contract, the tend to have more jobs available.
Rates since July 2008 are as follows:
SHO / FY2 ... £30 to £38 per hour (PAYE) and up to £45 per hour (Limited Company)
