Making The Right Career Choice

"Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life". - Confucius (551–479 B.C.), Chinese philosopher.

Making the right career choice is obviously a very important starting point for getting the right job in UK. Those words of Confucius have thus never been timelier, considering the increasing pressures of work on life today with its attendant problems. Our career choice will determine how much enjoyment and fulfillment we have in life.

Are you already committed to a line of employment, or just looking for any job to keep body and soul together? Could it be that you are thinking of moving into a completely new trade or profession? Then be prepared to investigate your career choice and take a pick.

Before you proceed, be very clear in your mind that you are at a turning point in your life. Agree that you will not be afraid of taking hard and difficult decisions.

Making the right career choice and planning how you will be able to track down that job should be the first step in trying to get a UK job . A careful and honest search for the right job for you will eternally free you from the drudgery of work.

Also agree that you will give a careful well meditated consideration to all the issues involved before taking that final decision on career choice and possibly a career change.

Remember: "the biggest mistake people make in life is not making a living at doing what they most enjoy." Malcolm S. Forbes (1919-1990). So do not hesitate to change your career if you have to.

Even if you enjoy your current job and you are making a career change because of a difficult family, political or social circumstance, if you look very well around, you would be surprised that there are quite a few other career choices you can make and enjoy. So be determined. But How can one effectively determine which career is right for him or her?

To succeed in a career you need to consider your personality type, what bring smiles to your face, the type of life style you hope to achieve, your abilities and disabilities, your family situation if you have one, and the type of job you would like to do if you are not already committed to a path.

A thorough assessment of yourself, job type and then choosing from the various types of careers is inevitable to succeeding in making the right choice of career. Again do not be afraid of turning your back on an employment type if you are sure your happiness would not lie there. It is estimated that an average person will have about ten job changes in his life time. Thus career choices will continue to be an issue in our working life.

Specific range of career choice assisting tests have been designed and these include:

  • Career Self Assessment
This involves assessing one's values in life, roles, interest, abilities and long term plan. Briefly, it consists of values, personality, interest and skills inventories. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)assessment test is one of the leading tools used in personality inventory self assessment. Please read more about career self assessment here

  • Occupational Interest assessments
Occupational interest assessment is the second component of assessment test in determining a career choice. It involves taking an inventory of all the types of jobs you think you will like to do, based on your personality, skills, interest and values. You should then research thoroughly into those jobs and see what the working conditions are, salaries and training required. There are expert designed tools that will help match your interest to a job. See more of this at the occupational interest assessments section
