UK CV Format

Google

Getting the right CV format is crucial to winning the scramble for attention when you apply for a job. There is no one perfect way to present a CV.

You must present your CV to reflect what is obtainable in the field you want to work in, or reflect what you have done in the past, where you did them, and what you can offer to your prospective employer.

To achieve this, you need a good CV format. UK CV format is more or less like the North American résumé. For business and general employment, the CV is a brief summary of relevant skills and achievements, training, and job experience relevant to the specific job applied for.

For medical, graduate and academic positions, the format for CV in the UK is one of a more detailed and comprehensive account of qualifications, job experience, publications, awards, research and or audits involved in teaching, management experience and more

What ever your field of interest, experience or achievements, see the various types of CV formats presented here, and determine which format would fit you.

Chronological CV

This is the most widely used style of UK CV format. It is also called an historical CV. It highlights, in a reverse chronological approach, your past career pathway and history as well as shows the skills you have accumulated over time.

The advantage of the Chronological CV is that it focuses attention on your career development, and is best used if you intend remaining in the same type of employment and working field.

Professionals like lawyers, doctors, pharmacists, teachers, accountants, publishers, to name a few, will find this format of CV suiting, and adequate.

Chronological CV format is not what you want to use if you have long career gap, unemployed for some time, or changing career. It is not also ideal if you have had some demotion at place of work or if you do not have the specific relevant experience for a job. An example of a chronological CV is presented here

Performance CV

A performance CV is exactly the same as a chronological or historic CV which remains the traditional UK CV format.

The only difference is that a performance CV, as the name implies highlights your performance at the very beginning. Immediately after the profile heading, it goes to enumerate and briefly highlight your achievements.

Again it is good if you want to draw attention to your achievements in a given field where you still intend to continue to work in. The companies where you have worked are also highlighted, especially if you have worked in a company that is a big player in that field of expertise you are applying for.

An example is to put in a heading on “worked at Harrods" or "Marks & Spencer", should you be seeking employment with say a small retail shop.

This format of CV will obviously share the same disadvantages with a chronological CV.

Functional CV

This is another popular UK CV format, though less often used. It is also referred to as skills CV. It highlights the skills or achievement you have gathered over time without recourse to mentioning the company or organisation you have worked for. It presents you as you are, and shows your various past functions and achievements.

It is the format to use if you do not have a track record of employment to show, or do not have an experience in a particular field of employment you are applying for.

A ready example would be one looking to work as an office administrator, who has spent the previous years working as a sales executive.

A functional CV is the CV format of choice, should you be self employed, say like a free lance writer or artist, wanting to do a job for someone else.

The advantage is that it does not tie your skills to a particular line of employment. The employer would be looking for the person with your kind of skills, and not necessarily the company where you have worked in the past. It is ideal if you are thinking of making a career change.

To draw up a functional CV, you will need to carefully read through the advertised persons specification and job description, and match your skills to the requirement in order of striking importance.

More detail and an example is provided of a functional CV.

Targeted CV

Targeted CV is like skills or functional CV, except that it targets the CV to a particular employer and skill required. It means you can leave out employment or details of jobs done that may not be relevant to the new job you are applying for.A hybrid of targeted performance CV may prove very effective

Combination CV

As the name implies, a combination CV is a hybrid of chronological and functional CV. It presents your skills and achievements in a reverse chronological order, and equally highlights areas where you have excel as you go along.

There is a column along side the job history that emphasizes your specific successes and achievements. It is like having the sun shine upon you from both sides.

Whatever CV format that best suit you from these lots, go for it as you continue your search for a UK job. Get a Sample CV Format to Create Yours Now
