IELTS Listening Test

The IELTS listening section is often the first part of the exam. It consists of four sections, with total of 40 items, lasting for 30 minutes.

The IELTS listening test starts off with you been given a booklet with questions. It gives you an idea of the subject matter to be discussed and questions that may be asked. Read through this as quickly as possible.

A recorded voice would then be played, giving you sets of information. Questions would be asked, and it is your duty to promptly respond and write down the answer in your work book.

Key to Success in Listening Anticipate what the speaker is going to say. Answer immediately on your sheet of paper. Do not wait to get to the end before putting in your answers as you may forget.

Try not to loose concentration. If you can not recall a statement made, do not dwell on that. Move on to the next question and stage.

At the end, you would be given 10 minutes to ound up your work. This is the time to try to recall what you think you heard, and attempt to fill in those gaps you could not fill during the listening exercise.

A good way to practise for the IELTS listening test is to get a transistor radio and listen to the English Service of BBC World Broadcast.

Listen to what they say and try to ask your self questions as to whether you understand them. The exam is not going to be too different from what you would hear there.

If you can score up to 30 to 35 of the answers right in the here, you would have scored above band 6.5 on this vital listening section.
