IELTS Reading Module

The IELTS reading section is basically the same as a comprehension exercise.

You have 60 minutes to read and demonstrate understanding of three passages by providing answers to about 40 questions that would be asked (20 minutes for each passage).

The key to passing this section would be:

• Prepare and practise several comprehension passages at home before coming in for the exam

• Good time management. Learn to read very fast, and make sure that you understand what you read. You will need to read each of the passages for about 10 minutes, and provide the answers within the other 10 minutes.

Preparation is just the key The more similar comprehensions you do, you would build your mind to work fast, and it would be easy on the test day

• You will need to apply the SQR3 formula to succeed.

Studies have shown that to thoroughly understand and retain a study material,if it is first of all Surveyed (a quick look across the pages, subheadings, tables and pictures if there are any), attached Questions to the material considered (or develope possible questions if none is provided in the material) read and asked, then the material carefully Read, Rehearsed and then Read again, there is a very high chance of even low IQ students scoring 70 – 90% on the subject.

This has been termed SQR3 formula. It works. Try it now.

Survey the subject given, looking through the subheadings, tables, pictures. This will give you an over-view of the issue discussed.

Then formulate possible questions from that initial survey. Questions like, what is this material or subject all about. What thought is conveyed in each paragraph? What use is this to me or to the writer.

Life would off course be much easier were questions are provided, as in the ielts reading module.

Now read through the material and try to find answers to each of the questions as you proceed.

Rehearse what you have read. Say all you have read and learnt to yourself without looking at the text.

Now read the text again and filling the gap if you missed any major point during rehearsing.

If you do this for any material in any subject, you will always come out with flying collars. It does not take so much time as one may think it would initially.

Make good use of the sample reading material provided by IELTS organisation, which you can find on their site, and you would be sure to score well on your IELTS reading test.
