Tell me about your self

This is increasingly becoming an opening interview question. It is one of the top interview questions asked across any field or profession. It sounds simple, but could be a difficult question for the unprepared.

This is your chance to assert your suitability and reinforce your professionalism. It is an opportunity to sell yourself.

As an interview expert said, it is like offering you a one-minute commercial slot on prime time TV. You go straight to crystallise your training, years of experience, skills you have acquired and the strong points in you.

Be precise. Give specific example of achievement and what you will bring into the job.

A sample job interview answer to the question, “tell me about yourself” is:

‘I am a graduate of the University of Westminster Business School, leaving there with a first class honours and numerous awards and prizes.

I have spent the last five years of my professional life working with the London Stock Exchange in the capacity of foreign exchange budget controller.

I have closely managed my portfolio over the years that we were able to wipe out an inherited trade deficit of £9870000:00 within the first eighteen months of my arrival there. We have continued to maintain our accounts in credit ever since.

I have directly provided oversight to forty-four staff under me, motivating them to be optimally productive.

I have acquired valuable experience in fiscal financial discipline, which I am sure I will bring to this company if given this job.’

Tell me about your CV

This question is much like the above one. It is easier in that it is specific. You should have mastered your CV before going to any interview.

The answer here will be more structured to your academic qualifications, a quick run through your previous employments and responsibilities, research and publications if any, teaching experience, hobbies and career plan or progression plan.

A sample job interview answer would be:

‘I hold a BSc in Medical Microbiology as well as the European Computer Driving License both from St Mary’s University in London.

I have worked in Guys and St. Thomas’s as an MLSO for three years before taking up a PhD in Cloning and Gene Manipulation, leading to my appointment as the chair of the Human Genome Project after working for Novartis for ten years.

I am desirous of furthering my interest in the genetics of inborn error of metabolism and cystic fibrosis, hence I am seeking to take up this new role.’

You must use this question to turn what may seem to be a weakness to your strength. We all have weaknesses, so do not be afraid to mention one weakness.

‘I could get upset for days when things are not done properly. It could then affect my relationship with my junior colleagues.
