Career Self Assessment
![]() Career self assessment involves a sincere honest evaluation one’s personality, motivations, goals, likes, abilities and long term plans. This is done in relation to the possible type of career or jobs that one will be willing to do and what he or she is looking to get from a job. Questions that needs answering to provide insight into one's career interest and factors that will make him or her enjoy the job long term will include: • Why do I want to work? This is not an unnecessary self assessment question if you have a spouse brining in reasonable income, and you think you just want a part time job or job to augment the household income. Your wanting to work may just be as a way of meeting people. The reason for wanting to work should be clear in your mind • What industry will I be willing to work in? You could actually write down the list of trades or profession (industry) you would definitely not be glade to work in. If you are living your current trade because of poor job satisfaction, switching to a new trade would be reasonable. Career change could also be within the same trade but in a different establishment • How will working affect my relationship(s)? Is there a family to look after? Does this mean that I may well do with a flexi-job or job share? This is often the case for mothers who sacrifice career on the altar of lovingly looking after their kids. Such great parent deserves commendation. Working part time during school hours could be the only way to out. Any new job will be tailored towards school time. The reason you are about to make a new career choice may be because you could not find employment in your current field, or because of family commitments. • How far away from home am I ready to commute? If you need to commute from Norwich to London Liverpool Street daily for work, and that is the only job you could get, there may be a time you may decide enough is enough and look for a career change. Your new choice of career may thus be influenced by proximity to home • What type of salary will I be expecting? • Will I be happy to abandon a profession I have been trained in? Suppose you were trained as a medical doctor and now thinking of career change. Are you sure of giving off medicine for international trade or IT? You may well be. But if you are making such drastic career change, be sure you will be happy with your decision • What are my skills and abilities? The skills and abilities you possess now may not be exactly right for your new job. You may find out though that the skills you have learnt from your previous job and training can be adapted to a new job • Am I ready to get retrained for new roles? Making overt career choices may require one re-training for new roles. Apart from been ready to train for the new role, do you have the money and other commitment that may be required? • Is age on my side? • How long would I want to work in a new role before retirement? • Could I start my own business? Do I really have the commitment and dedication starting my own new business will take? • What are my plans for pension and retirement? Career self assessment could be initiated by you, but you will best benefit from having another person discuss these issues with you. You could speak to professional career counsellor or assess career self assessment sites. For a thorough indebt career self assessment, you will need to establish your:
